About this hub
Appalshop is a multimedia arts and community media organization rooted in the Appalachian mountains of eastern Kentucky. Founded in 1969, it has become a nationally significant center for Appalachian storytelling, documentary media, radio, archives, training, and cultural work.
The organization operates across several forms of media and community arts, including film, radio, archival preservation, youth and community media, and public education. Its Community Media Initiative provides media training and technical assistance so organizations and residents can tell their own stories and use media for community development.
Appalshop belongs in Community Media Voices because it shows how local media can preserve regional culture while also challenging stereotypes and power. Its work has helped Appalachian people document their own lives, speak in their own voices, and build media rooted in place rather than extractive coverage from outside the region.
