About this hub
Akaku Maui Community Media is an independent nonprofit community media center established in 1992 to serve Maui County, Hawaii, operating PEG access channels for the islands of Maui, Molokai, and Lanai.
The organization manages three Spectrum cable channels - Akaku Green (Channel 53) for government and public affairs with gavel-to-gavel County Council and Planning Commission coverage, Akaku Red (Channel 54) for open community-submitted programming, and Akaku Blue (Channel 55) as a curated live-and-local showcase channel - plus community talk radio station KAKU 88.5 FM. Akaku's media center in Kahului provides production facilities and training, and the organization uses LiveU cellular technology to broadcast live from any location across the islands.
Maui residents know Akaku as the place to follow County Council meetings and elections live, catch community events from Molokai and Lanai that would otherwise go uncovered, and find the Maui Daily Report and monthly Akaku Upstairs community forum - the only locally produced news and civic media operation serving all of Maui County.
