About this hub
BAVC Media (Bay Area Video Coalition) is a nonprofit community media organization founded in San Francisco in 1976 by a coalition of media makers and activists who wanted civic-minded applications for the then-new PortaPak video technology.
Through its SF Commons program, BAVC operates San Francisco's only public access broadcasting channel, providing free training, studio access, and equipment to San Francisco residents who want to produce and air their own noncommercial television. Beyond SF Commons, BAVC offers workforce development and advanced training, youth and emerging media maker programming, artist development fellowships, and audiovisual preservation services - programs that collectively serve thousands of filmmakers, freelancers, activists, and job-seekers each year, with particular emphasis on underrepresented voices and communities.
San Franciscans know BAVC as the gateway to getting a show on local cable TV and as the city's leading community media training hub - a place where independent storytellers have been making media on their own terms for nearly five decades.
