About this hub
Amherst Media is a nonprofit community media center in Amherst, Massachusetts, founded in 1976 and recognized as the oldest continuously operating community media center in the United States.
Operating from its facility on College Street, Amherst Media runs three PEG channels for Amherst cable subscribers - Channel 12 (Public Access), Channel 15 (Education), and Channel 9 (Government) - and operates a Media Lab where residents can borrow equipment, use computers, and learn editing skills. It serves as Western Massachusetts' Apple Authorized Training Center and offers workshops in cameras, field equipment, editing, and production software, with programming ranging from Town Council and School Committee meetings to international cultural programs, Democracy Now, and the student-produced Amherst Weekly Report.
Amherst residents - including the large university community from UMass Amherst and the Five Colleges - know Amherst Media as the place to catch town government in action, produce a show on any topic, and access a free-speech media platform that has shaped local civic life for nearly five decades.
