Amy Goodman

Amy Goodman co-founded Democracy Now! in 1996 at WBAI, Pacifica Radio's New York station, where she had worked as a producer and news director for a decade. Built on the Pacifica tradition of listener-supported, advertiser-free media, Democracy Now! grew into what its own description calls the largest public media collaboration in the United States, carried on more than 1,400 public television, radio, and community media stations worldwide. That distribution runs directly through the PEG and public media infrastructure that community media centers maintain, making Amy a consistent presence in those spaces every day the program airs.

The program operates without advertising, corporate underwriting, or government funding, sustained entirely by viewer and listener contributions. That structural choice, made at the program's founding and held through three decades of growth, demonstrates at scale what community media has always argued: that a media outlet accountable only to its audience produces journalism that commercial structures cannot.

In 2004, Amy received the ACM's Dirk Koning-George Stoney Award for Humanistic Communication, recognition that connected her work to the field's longest-running argument about who media should serve and how it should be funded.
