Public Access Leadership Honoree

Carl Kucharski is a community media leader with roots in Columbus, Ohio and Somerville, Massachusetts, where Somerville Community Access Television, now Somerville Media Center, is the oldest cable access television station in Massachusetts, founded in 1983 and home to what it describes as the longest running access program in the world, "Dead Air Live," which has aired since 1972. His work in the field during the Growth and Expansion decades reflected the national and regional leadership that the Buske Leadership Award recognized when it was presented to him in 1997, a period when community media was navigating the policy pressures of the 1996 Telecommunications Act and fighting to maintain local franchising authority.

His service to the ACM at the national and regional level placed him among the practitioners who helped the field develop the organizational capacity to respond to those pressures, building the relationships and shared infrastructure that community media centers still depend on.

Carl's career reflects the generation that turned public access from a collection of local experiments into a coordinated national field with shared professional standards and a collective political voice.
