Chag Lowry

Chag Lowry is a Native author, filmmaker, educator, and graphic storyteller whose work is rooted in Yurok, Maidu, and Achumawi/Pit River ancestry from northern California. His media and writing practice has focused on Native stories, veterans' history, cultural memory, and the importance of communities speaking in their own voices. Through books, film, comics, and education, Chag has helped preserve and share histories that are often left out of mainstream media, including the experiences of Native veterans and the continuing strength of Native language and culture.

His contribution to community media reflects the field's deeper promise: access is not only about channels, cameras, or distribution, but about who has the right and support to tell a story. In 2014, Chag received the ACM's Jewell Ryan-White Award for Cultural Diversity, recognizing work that brought Native languages, culture, and community voice into public media space. His work belongs in the archive as part of the Indigenous media and cultural preservation lineage: media made from within community, with responsibility to history, identity, and future generations.
