Dirk Koning

Dirk Koning was the founding Executive Director of the Grand Rapids Community Media Center and one of the most generous and consequential voices the community media field has known. Born on the Zuni reservation in northwestern New Mexico in 1957, Dirk brought what colleagues described as a missionary spirit to his work: an instinct toward empowerment, connection, and civic possibility that shaped everything he built in Grand Rapids. What began as the public access channel GRTV grew under his leadership into a model civic media ecosystem that included WYCE community radio, a nonprofit internet service provider, the Wealthy Theatre, and later The Rapidian, a citizen journalism platform.

Dirk's work was animated by a larger belief that communities needed their own tools to speak, create, gather, argue, remember, and imagine. He helped connect television, radio, the internet, local arts, neighborhood voices, and civic participation long before "media ecosystem" became common language in the field. He traveled widely to speak, teach, encourage, and challenge, bringing a mix of humor, conviction, urgency, and hope that people still remember. The ACM recognized his leadership with the Sue Miller Buske Leadership Award in 1989, and after his death named its Humanistic Communication Award in his honor, later known as the Dirk Koning-George Stoney Award. He also taught as an adjunct faculty member at Grand Valley State University, where a film and video scholarship was later endowed in his name.

Dirk died on February 10, 2005, at age 48. In his final months, he had been leading Grand Rapids' effort to develop a citywide Wi-Fi network, characteristically looking ahead of where the field was already standing. His influence lives in the stations, organizers, producers, and community media centers that learned from his example, and in the idea he helped make believable: that community media could be a public commons, a creative home, and a democratic practice rooted in the everyday voices of a community.
