Community Media Leadership Honoree

John Donovan is a community media leader connected to the New York and New Jersey area whose career spanned the Growth, Expansion, and Transition decades of PEG access, a period that included some of the most significant regulatory battles in the field's history. He served on the ACM national board and contributed to the field's advocacy and organizational work during the years when statewide franchising legislation was stripping local governments of their ability to negotiate PEG provisions, and when the case for community media's public value needed to be made repeatedly to elected officials and cable companies. He received the ACM's Sue Miller Buske Leadership Award in 2001.

His northeast regional base gave him direct exposure to the densely organized community media landscape of New York and New Jersey, where multiple strong stations and advocacy organizations shared territory and collaborated on state and federal policy.

John's sustained involvement at the national level during a period of significant regulatory threat reflects the kind of field leadership that does not generate headlines but keeps the organizational infrastructure intact when it is needed most.
