Rika Welsh

Rika Welsh was one of the early women leaders who helped shape community media as both a profession and a public calling. Her work came from the years when public access centers were still proving what they could be: not just channels, but places where residents learned to use media, tell local stories, document community life, and take part in public conversation. In 1995, Rika received the ACM's Sue Miller Buske Leadership Award, placing her among the national leaders whose service helped strengthen the field during a formative period.

Rika's legacy also lives in the Northeast, where the ACM Northeast Region named its Community Impact recognition in her honor. That award recognizes projects that help people understand a cause more clearly and show the power of PEG resources to deepen purpose, visibility, and community voice. It is a fitting tribute because Rika's place in the field was not only about organizational leadership. It was about the belief that community media should help people see one another more fully and use local platforms for meaning, connection, and public good.

For Community Media Voices, Rika represents the women whose work helped hold the field together: the mentors, organizers, producers, managers, advocates, and regional leaders who built standards, relationships, and purpose while access television was still becoming a movement. Her name belongs in the memory of community media not only because she was honored by the field, but because the field continued to honor others in her name.
