The Record
Staci Layton is a producer and co-creator of T-Time in Olympia, the community media program that received the ACM's 2017 Jewell Ryan-White Award for Cultural Diversity. T-Time used Olympia's public access channel to create regular, accessible conversations about gender, sexuality, LGBTQ+ life, medical questions, and community experience, building a local resource for a community that had limited representation in either commercial or mainstream public media.
The program's approach placed community members, medical professionals, and advocates in conversation with each other through the format of local access television, producing educational content that was rooted in specific community needs rather than general audience appeal.
T-Time's recognition by the ACM reflected the field's understanding that cultural diversity in community media is most meaningful when it produces programming that no other outlet would carry, speaking directly to and from communities that commercial media treats as too small or too specific to serve.
