Sue Charles received the ACM's Jewell Ryan-White Award for Cultural Diversity in 2000, recognized for her connection to Native Media in Tacoma, Washington. Her work represents Indigenous and Native-centered media practice within the public access field, and Native Media's use of community television to support Native community storytelling, cultural representation, and local voice reflects one of the more specific and historically underrepresented applications of what public access channels make possible.
The award places Sue's contribution in the field's commitment to cultural diversity at a moment when that commitment was being tested against the actual programming and priorities of access centers across the country.
