Community Media and Digital Inclusion Leader

Digital 2010-2019

Seth Ring developed MetroEast Community Media's Rockwood DIY initiative in Gresham, Oregon, a youth media and digital literacy program serving one of the most economically and racially diverse communities in the Portland metro area. The program provided hands-on production training, technology access, and media skills to young people who had few other pathways into media creation, connecting community television's open-access model to the daily realities of a community with significant barriers to both media tools and civic participation. In 2019 he received the ACM's Emerging Leader Award.

Rockwood DIY treated media education as a form of community investment, building skills and relationships in a neighborhood that commercial media covered primarily through crime reporting and political controversy.

Seth's work at MetroEast reflects the training strand of community media at its most intentional: not just offering access to equipment, but actively building the capacity of a specific community to use media to tell its own story.
