Zenaida Mendez

Zenaida Mendez is a community activist, public access producer, filmmaker, and longtime Manhattan Neighborhood Network leader whose work has connected media access with social justice, neighborhood voice, and public service. She first became involved with public access television in the early 1990s as an MNN community producer, using local media as a way to lift up issues and communities that mainstream coverage too often overlooked. Over time, that producer's path grew into organizational leadership, including roles as MNN's External Affairs Director, Director of the El Barrio Firehouse Community Media Center, and Chief External Affairs Officer.

Zenaida's work matters because it shows how community media can become a welcoming public home for people who need more than representation. Through MNN and the El Barrio Firehouse, her leadership helped connect women, people of color, LGBTQ+ communities, artists, neighborhood organizations, and social justice advocates with the tools, training, and public platforms to speak in their own voices. That work is rooted in the belief that media access is not only technical support. It is a way of making civic life more visible, more participatory, and more honest.

In 2022, Zenaida received the ACM's Jewell Ryan-White Award for Cultural Diversity, recognizing work that helped expand whose stories could be told through community media. Her legacy belongs to the neighborhood-access and community-justice side of the field: the people who make stations feel like doors opening, not systems to navigate.
